Project Overview
West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is improving an approximately 1.7-mile section of Jefferson Road (WV 601) from US 119 to US 60. These needed upgrades will improve safety, reduce congestion and improve opportunities for economic development.
Construction will widen Jefferson Road to five lanes, add a new roundabout at Kanawha Turnpike, and build a new overpass bridge that spans Pennsylvania Avenue, CSX Railroad, Davis Creek and Kanawha Turnpike.

Project Updates
Beginning on 8/11/2025, the entrance to Jefferson Road WV 601 southbound from US 60 will be closed to traffic. The closure will not affect the Southbound sections of WV 601 past the South Charleston Community Center. Access to Bob Evans/McDonald’s will remain open via the northbound lane of Jefferson Road. To access the roundabout, detour signs will be placed directing traffic to Kanawha Turnpike via Chestnut Street, or via Montrose Drive.
Phase 4 of the project has begun! This has brought a significant change in the traffic pattern. Please remain cautious when travelling through the work zone.
In the new traffic pattern, the bridge will be open for northbound and southbound traffic! In addition to this, the new roundabout will open underneath the bridge on Kanawha Turnpike. Follow posted signage and use caution in the roundabout. Please reduce speed in the work zone.
The bike trail crossing the new bridge will remain closed until further notice.
